sequence database

I was wondering what kind of database is used for the on-line EIS.
I would like to maintain my own database of a few hundred sequences
selected from the EIS. Does anyone have any suggestions what kind of
software to use? Right now I keep each sequence entry in a different
file and that does not scale well. I am using Red Hat Linux 6.1 i386
in case that matters. Oh, and Neil mentioned a fast "grep" command.
Is that available somewhere?  Shalom, Michael
