I mostly agree with David on this one.  If you need this in the database, make it a separate element, and have the input program or the database itself compute it.
 
This goes back to something I've complained about before - when specifying a table, the full indices of the first element should be entered, not (as the directions now suggest) only the "most important" index.
 
More generally, reusing a database element for a vaguely related but distinct purpose is always a mistake.
