In chess terminology, a "half move" is called a "play". A play by White
followed by a play by Black constitute a move.

Concerning 176: The largest known number of possible plays from a legal
position is 218:

R6R/3Q4/1Q4Q1/4Q3/2Q4Q/Q4Q2/pp1Q4/kBNN1KB1 w - - 0 1

(Petrovic, 1964).
