Here is my motivation for asking about the quartic:

 

In an alleyway, you brace one ladder against the foot of the left building
and lean it against the right building. You brace a second ladder against
the foot of the right building and lean it against the left building,
touching the first ladder. You know the lengths of the ladders and the
height at which they cross. What is the width of the alleyway?
