I seem to recall that C.S. Peirce had an interesting
sort of iterative way of arranging the rationals in
a linear sequence.  If you have access to a library,
one place he mentions it is in his 'Collected Papers',
vol. 4, paragraph 681 (pp. 578-580), or "CP 4.681",
as is the custom among Peirce scholars.

It seems like I saw more detailed discussions elsewhere
in his papers.  I will try to hunt them up later, and
maybe copy out some excerpts if need be this weekend.
