... Hello David,
yes, you are right, of course... The hard part being,
as usual, the definition of "some reason", or "interesting",
or "worth submitting", or whatever... As storage is almost
free nowadays, and as there are powerfull tools to browse
the OEIS, I'm inclined to follow Benoît's comment!
Sorry to mention a recent post of mine, but the idea of
"replacing a prime number by it's rank [in A000040]" in
some construction of sequence could be seen as totally
stupid (especially when the next instruction is "conca-
tenate this and that") -- but a handfull of friends of
mine (France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, US) who are more
in poetry (!) than in pure maths, liked the idea! Mathe-
maticians speaking only pure maths (this is "no base-10
maths", no "concatenations", no "last digit", etc. -- you
know what I mean), talking to other pure mathematicians,
will surely produce (sometimes) very interesting stuff
-- but let some doors open, as Benoît's post stated
(between the lines).
I propose this simple solution to the "pure" mathemati-
cians on top of their watchtowers: please mark as "dumb"
any sequence you dislike in the OEIS -- and filter them
in your next researchs.
Personnaly I don't care too much if sequences are tagged
this or that: I learn everyday from browsing the OEIS
-- and I think many others too.
A last word for the young browsers: let them be catched
by sequences like "Look & Say", for instance... L&S,
for "pure mathematicians", is an insanity -- but it is
fun! And what we need, in life, is knowledge, education,
love, yes... but also fun, fun, fun!
Best,
É.

Honestly, folks, if I were inclined, I could take the OEIS out to A999999 in
a day or so.

Really, there should be some reason to submit.

Dear all,

After having used the OEIS and its webcam for a while, I think there
are hundreds, even thousands, of totally uninteresting sequences in
the OEIS. I first thought they were a stain on the OEIS, making
exterior people think it was a place crowded with numerologists and
pseudo-scientists. And this puzzled me since I appreciate much this
wonderful tool and the work of all its editors and contributors.

Nevertheless, I think that these sequences should remain, because of
the 'E' of OEIS, that is, the will to be encyclopedic, or universal,
even towards the less interesting. Also, we never know if a sequence
won't turn out to be of particular interest in the future (the history
of mathematics is filled with such examples).

This was my humble opinion, somewhere between the clumsy and the
obvious. Also, I'm aware that sometimes, considering a sequence
uninteresting only reveals my ignorance.

Regards,
Benoit Jubin
