I also like "contributor", and would like to cast my vote to change "author"
to "author / contributor", or simply "contributor", or "contributed by".

I don't like "author / contributed by", because on one side of the
slash you have
a noun and on the other you've got a verb+preposition, which makes it
appear awkward. When using a slash, the words or phrases on either
side should be grammatically interchangeable, even if not used within
a sentence.
