Hi Jeremy,

This is not an area with which I'm very familiar. I do, though, remember
briefly scanning a (new?) mathematical
article within the past year or so that dealt specifically in detail with
the mathematics behind quilt patterns,
classifying them, and only that. All else I can remember for sure is that
the article was lengthy and written by
a woman -- not very helpful for finding it again! (I've spent,
inexplicably, a couple of hours trying to find it anyway
-- in vain.) I can't say for certain whether it mentioned the specific
patterns you've described.

The following 1977 article by Grunbaum and Shephard, "Tilings by Regular
Polygons," is the closest I've come:
http://mathdl.maa.org/images/upload_library/22/Allendoerfer/1978/0025570x.di021102.02p0230f.pdf
I believe it's cited by the article I can't find. It seems to be cited
often. It mentions at least the "windmill blades"
quilt pattern. (Btw, while doing this search, I believe I also encountered
an unknown-to-me, abstract mathematical
object (which is possibly irrelevant to this discussion) known as a 'quilt'.

Maybe this will somehow be helpful in inspiring other sequences or helping
you find more recent references.

Regards,
Rick
