Your answers to the first two make sense.

I am currently mrob.com on a rented virtual dedicated server on HostMDS, for
about $75 USD per year. This is just a normal web server that I can SSH to
to get a shell prompt, and certain pages run PHP scripts on the server.
Rather than charging extra for bandwidth usage, they simply limit the
bandwidth. Obviously running BOINC is different, but in terms of CPU and
bandwidth usage, I don't think it's much different than a web server.

So yeah, I think you should shop around. I do not believe GoDaddy is the
best company to provide this particular service. They are really high
profile due to their advertising budget, and they probably get a higher
price on all the niche services. But there are dozens of ecological niches
for different types of server business, and little companies specializing in
each one.

Heck, $324/year is only a little less than MacMiniColo's rate, and that's
for a standalone physical server (a Mac Mini, which you configure and then
ship to them). There has to be something in a virtualized blade server
that's cheaper than that.
