Robert, the reason I suggested that it might be necessary to start with a number bigger than 1 was this: we are looking for a permutation of 1,2,3,... whose |diffs| are 1,2,3,... If no such permutation exists starting with 1, then it is still possible that one exists that starts with 8 (say). Neil
