There is a vary similar sequence 12,38,125,414,1369,4522,14934,... in
Table 2 (column n=4) of http://www.geekwriter.com/ugrad/cs202/doc/rook.doc
which counts self-avoiding rook paths on stripes. The rook starts
in one corner and finishes in the opposite corner. A007764 is mentioned
in that report.
