q=1 can be seen directly from the equation:

If k satisfies the equation
k^3 - k^2 - k - 1 = 0
then
k^3 - k^2 - 1 = k.
Dividing by k, we have
k^2 - k - 1/k = 1
but the l.h.s. is q as it is defined.
