I imagine it's sensitive to subtleties of how you define squarefree, and
opinions and tastes on this may differ.
My impulse would be to define squarefree in terms of prime factorization--a
squarefree number then has all exponents <2. The exponents in the prime
factorization of 1 are all 0, so under that definition it is squarefree.
But perhaps there are other equally consistent alternative interpretations.
