As a suggestion for the toothpicks, perhaps a picture of the tree
structure, the way each toothpick has 0, 1 or 2 children.  I tried a
single quadrant (as per A153000)

Lines alone seem clearer once you know what you're looking at :-).
Could highlight the middle two points which is where the symmetry
pivots.

The tree doesn't have the nice canals and joined lines of the
full-length toothpicks, but it illustrates how power-of-2 quarters are
traversed and hence some of the formulas like total(2^(k+1)) =
4*total(2^k) + 2.
