In fact, the "on-line" Merriam-Webster dictionary drops the dash andd defines "online" with the same meaning. This is becoming more mainstream (especially in Great Britain, I read), since words like "five-fold" and "non-periodic" tend to now have their dashes dropped and are more often written as "fivefold" and nonperiodic.
