[seqfan] Weaving

I was looking at my daughter's awesome cherry pie crust latticework, and
being the nerd I am, I wondered if there is a mathematical theory of
weaving, e.g., thread patterns in cloth, chain link fence, chain main, chair
caning, and other 2d-surfaces.

I would think theory would bump up against topology, knot and braid theory,
lattice theory and tessellations, but does it fall completely under any of
these areas?
