I think this advice and the resource provided by Terence Tao regarding this topic is very helpful in many cases.

Some not so seriously meant alternative approach:

Some one who posses a valid proof could craft carefully
an equivalent problem such that it is completely unobvious that it is essentially the same problem.
An example for such a problem was provided by Doron Zeilberger,
(https://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.1532.pdf) his famous determinant evaluation problem.

Unfortunately in this case it got recognized after a while that it is related to the Collatz conjecture.

If nobody catches the relation to the Collatz conjecture and it succeeds to provide an well accepted proof for it, then after a delay of some years one could reveal the connection to the Collatz conjecture.

Of course this is not meant seriously.
