maybe i wasn't clear enough.  if my file contains say
a[-1] = 1      (i.e. [- without -] )
then the webmaster's script that is looking for embedded perl
commands aborts the file at that point.

so many of the files associated with the database were corrupted.

i got around this by following every [ with a space,
and preceding every ] with a space

which led to my conclusion that "embperl" was written
by someone ignorant of mathematics and mathematica
