problems with submitting sequences

Jason Earls reported some time ago that unless he put dashes
into the web form for submitting a new sequence he gets
error messages from my cgi script

If he leaves an entry blank then the cgi script complains.

So he has to put in dashes, with the result that his submissions
look like this when they reach me:

I am unable to reproduce the problem, and no one else has ever
mentioned this trouble.   So let me ask the seqfan list:  have
any of you encountered the same problem?

If so, please tell me what browser you are using and which version,
also which ISP.  (Netscape 4.7 , IE 5.0, AOL, MSN, etc)
