advantages of gmane over google groups

here are some advantages of a newsreader option like gmane:

1. the current seqfan list would be maintained intact --
   all that happens is that an entity like "xxx-seqfan-xxx at gmane.org"
   is subscribed to the current list.

2. in other words, it does not require individual seqfanners to subscribe
   to anything.  (as a former victim of identity theft, the last time i
   went to sign up for google groups it required far more persondata
   than i was comfortable giving.  also, google corp is known for
   tracking and selling user behavior with adsense, etc.)

3. the newsreader window is already on the oldest browsers that i know.
   it looks like an inbox window on my old netscape, but it downloads
   only the msg headers when you open it.  you click on the msg header
   if you want to read it.  thus no storage of html msgs on your disk.

possible disadvantages:

it does archive the list -- so all your brilliant mistakes are public --
but i think there may be an X-noarchive option if this is a problem.
