Neil,

you can specify the path by listing its vertices (i.e., 1-digit
strings) rather than edges (i.e., 2-digit strings). This way the
elements of the sequence are simply single decimal digits.

For example, an equivalent sequence to the one stated in your original
email starts with:

0,0,1,0,2,0,3,0,4,0,5,...
