Maple can simplify a(n) a bit:
a(n) = sum((-1)^k*binomial(2*n-k,
k)^2*sqrt(Pi)/(2^(-2*n+2*k)*GAMMA(n-k+1)*GAMMA(1/2-n+k)), k = 0 .. n)
