But what I'm really looking for is a combinatorial
interpretation. For instance can one extend
Martin Renner's https://oeis.org/A217748 somehow
to the odd case?

Another motivation to look into this came from the
observation that changing the initial values of
the algorithm to x, y = 0, 1 gives the quarter-squares
https://oeis.org/A002620 which are rich in combinatorial
interpretations.
