Dear Lars,  I think the explanation is that you do not turn ON if two or
more of your neighbors are ON.

Only if exactly one of your neighbors is ON.

The extra X's in your picture have two neighbors labeled 6.

Take a look at my drawing in A319018

I used a different offset (I think Remy has the wrong offset.  I did my
drawing before I saw A319318,
in fact I did my drawing first and then I found A319318 - that was how I
found it)

In my drawing the cells with 2 neighbors have a black dot in them.  They do
not turn on.
