Lars,
I had the same problem with an early version of my program.
The thing is that the cells from older generations stay ON
and the "backward" 7's (your X) have a second neighbor from
an older generation: e.g. the X at co-ordinate (8,2) has as neighbor
the 4's at (6,1) and (6,3); the latter is also neighbor of the X at (7,1).
