I think what you need to do is described at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Interface/Sidebar, especially the
section "customize the sidebar", if I understand correctly.
(A small note on how I found this: I googled mediawiki change sidebar. That
what you need to change is the "sidebar" I found out by going to
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents,
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Navigation)
